Dreams Of A Black Sisterhood
Ode to Oluwatoyin & All Our Lost Sisters
In a dream you see me a WOMAN
Phenomenal, feminine, a valuable and priceless treasure
Honored and protected
In a dream I am NOT a piece or pawn in child or adult form
You empathize with my tearless cries and admire my strength and resilience You are disgusted by — nor penalize or belittle me for people’s disregard for me or being handled with little dignity or care for my physical, mental or emotional safety
In a dream you don’t patronize or coddle but you acknowledge my individual and collective history of pain and trauma
You see me and “it” and don’t dismiss it as trouble and drama
In a dream you know my demeanor is my armor — not eternal anger in my mind
And even if I am you — you know it’s righteous and justified
You defend and protect me because I’m worthy of your love and you time
In a dream you see my beauty is as timeless as the sands of Africa
My mind is brilliant and holds strategies that can raise a nation or bring the world to its knees
My spirit is good and sweet
My silence or screams are by choice not necessity
My heart is free from sorrow — always open
In a dream
You’d fight for me like I fight for you
And you welcome me with love and fierce devotion
In a dream
You’d love me like I love you, unconditionally and in spite of all you have and haven’t — are and aren’t and will and won’t be in my life and the lives of my sistas past, present, and future
In a dream
You’d hold me when I need an embrace
You’d wipe away the invisible tears hidden behind stoic or scowled face
You’d stand behind me when I face and move mountains
You’d accept my battle scars and wild or covered crown
In a dream
You’d love and honor me as I do you
You’d forgive and accept my imperfection…
